History of Xhosa Clothing

The traditional colour of the xhosa attire for both men and women used to be the ochre red colour. The Xhosa people then, would mix red soil with animal fat and dye their clothing to get the reddish colour.

But when the European missionaries arrived, they used the bible verse in Revelation 7:14 to convince the converts from using the color red. So the converts “washed” their attire into white and the new white and black Xhosa attire was born!
